You have registered for a one semester course in
Statistics--a nonmath major’s course. I expect that you will be able to handle
the
Algebra needed in the course,
calculus is not required
although at times I will refer to some
calculus. You will be
using the computer to ease the burden of calculations. You are
not required to be computer literate this is not a computer
course. There are many computer and calculator programs
available to do the statistical computations. Most computers
have
Excel, which contains a statistical program that will do
the job. More sophisticated programs are
SPSS
and
SAS. The
TI's
81, 82, etc all have built in statistical functions you will
need to consult the manual to use them. In addition to the above
I have a program
Statdisk that you can download to your computer
or use in any of the computer labs it is a simple "point and
click" program. We are interested in the finding and
interpretation of statistics not the devices that generate them.
The course is presented in three major sections:
1) Descriptive Statistics Chapters 1-3
2) Probability Chapters 4-6
3) Predictive Statistics Chapters 10-17, 12
Statistical methods are used in almost every field of study. In
some fields it is the only method of proof! Most research
utilizes statistical methods and most academic journals are
written in statistical terms. Hence, this course should be
useful for you.
BASIC RULES
1) Pass in all
homework on time and as complete as
possible. Late homework will be penalized. Note in your
assignment sheet the problems that are underlined are the
ones you pass in.
2) You are responsible for all
assignments announced and
unannounced.
3) Attendance: Important if your grades are "not good." Some
material covered in class is not in the book!
4) Grading:
Your Grade =

ti = each test
HW = Homework grade
5) Extra Help:
a) TA's hours TBA at a later date
b)
Math Workshop
hours TBA
c) My office hours are: M,W 11-1pm; T 10:30am-1pm (SC609)
6)
Test dates will be announced in advanced and will be "close"
to the dates on the over view. NO MAKEUPS
7) Inform me of any special needs or circumstances ASAP X2183 or
e-mail
8) The final exam will be a statistical project that will
encompass most of the content of the course. It will be given to
you on the last day of class and is due on the scheduled final
exam time and date. If for some reason we are not ready to do a
project then you will take a final exam at a scheduled time.
