MATH 132 Course Syllabus

Math 132 Statistics and Probability Spring 04

You have registered for a one semester course in Statistics - a non-Math majors course.  I expect that you will be able to handle the algebra needed in the course. Calculus is not required, although at times I will refer to some calculus. You will be using the computer to ease the burden of calculations.  You are not required to be computer literate as this is not a computer course. There are, however, many computer and calculator programs available to do the statistical computations.  Most computers have Excel, which contains a statistical program that will do the job.  More sophisticated programs are SPSS and SAS.  The TI's 81, 82, etc. all have built in statistical functions.  You will need to consult the manual to use them.  In addition to the above, I have a program, Statdisk that you can download to your computer or use in any of the computer labs.  It is a simple "point and click" program.  We are interested in the finding and interpretation of statistics, not the devices that generate them.

This course is presented in three major sections:

  1. Descriptive Statistics: Chapters 1-4

  2. Probability: Chapters 5-9

  3. Predictive Statistics: Chapters 10-17

Statistical methods are used in almost every field of study.  In some fields it is the only method of proof!  Most research utilizes statistical methods and most journals are written in statistical terms.  Hence, this course should be useful for you.
